In April 2008, The Midland Company completed a merger with the Munich Re Group, an international insurance business based in Munich, Germany. The Group operates in all lines of business, primary and reinsurance, with approximately 44,000 employees at over 50 locations throughout the world.
Fortune magazine in 2008 ranked Munich Re at number 98 on its Global 500 list of the world's largest companies.
The acquisition of The Midland Company, and its insurance subsidiary American Modern Insurance Group, is a key component of Munich Re's "Changing Gear" strategy for expanding its presence in the U.S. marketplace. The integration of the commercial insurance expertise of Munich Re America's Specialty Markets division with the personal lines experience of American Modern, has resulted in one of the nation's premier, cycle-resistant, specialty insurance organizations.
